Building a Deck? 3 Things You Should Know First

Posted on

If you are looking to extend your living area, one of the most effective ways of doing so is to build an outdoor deck. However, before you do so, you want to ensure that you go about it the right way. It can be a significant investment and you want to make certain that you get everything right. So, to ensure you get the most out of your deck, here are a few things that you should familiarize yourself with before you start building:

1. Make Sure to Invest in Fasteners.

While building a deck isn't the most expensive home improvement project that you could get yourself into, it also isn't the cheapest. Therefore, you may try to save money wherever you can. However, you won't want to do it with low-quality screws. These will corrode with time and discolor your deck, which will lead to a shortened deck life. So, invest in coated or stainless steel screws, as these will resist corrosion.

2. Become Familiar With Different Types of Decking Materials.

There are many different types of decking materials that can be used to construct your deck out of, especially today. If you prefer to use real wood and are a lover of the traditional options, then you could lean toward redwood or pressure-treated cedar. If you want a hardwood that is extremely rich and luxurious in appearance, then you could opt for jarrah and ipe, though they are more expensive.

If you want to stay away from wood, then you could go with composite or vinyl decking. They're both just as durable, yet they're virtually maintenance-free. They do cost more than wood, but you essentially get more bang for your buck due to the reduced maintenance (for example, you won't have to refinish them).

When it comes to the decking material, it all comes down to personal preference and how you want your deck to look, in addition to your budget.

3. Consider the Number of Levels You Want

Many homeowners tend to assume that decks can only be a single level. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. They can be multiple levels. In fact, if you need additional room after you have built a single-level deck, rather than building a larger platform, you should consider adding a level or two. This multiplies your entertaining and living space and helps to break up a long flight of stairs that can often be unattractive if your deck is elevated.

Building a deck on your own can get a little tricky. When you're ready, it may be a good idea to contact a professional deck installer like Rainier Fencing & Decking in your area to discuss your plans.
